Here’s a video version of this post.

4 ways to make your website stand out

If you’ve been hanging around here for even just a bit, then you already know I’m all about helping you make your website work for your business. And if it’s going to work and get the attention of your audience, you’ve got to make it stand out in ALL of the online noise. So you’ve got to set your site up in a way that makes an immediate connection.

So, you know that feeling when you walk into a store that you love and you instantly feel at home?

For me that store is Anthropologie. And I know I’m not alone here. In fact, the entire Anthropologie brand is based on comfort and inclusivity. When I’m there, I feel totally seen and understood. Like they just get me!

Well, that’s the way you want to make your dream client feel when they land on your website. So, let’s have a look at how you can make that happen.

1. Make it welcoming

You want your website to be clean, inviting, and easy to look at. If it’s cluttered your audience will be confused. They won’t know where to find what they’re looking for and they’ll feel overwhelmed and lost.

The goal is to make your messaging crystal clear and concise so they don’t have to burn brain calories trying to figure out what you do and how you can help them. It’s got to be obvious or they’ll click away.

2. Make an instant connection

The moment someone comes across your brand or website the first thing they want to know is, “What’s in it for me?”

This is where your BIG message comes into play. This is the one-liner that lets your dream client know in a super concise way that you understand their pain point and you can help them solve their problem.

The idea is to get their attention by making an immediate connection to their pain point — get them saying “YES, that’s me…that’s what I want.”

In addition to your BIG message, you should choose shapes and colors that evoke your brand’s personality. By doing this, you can use your visuals to strategically make your audience feel the way that you intend when they see your brand.

3. Speak their language

One of the best ways to make your dream client feel at home is to be relatable.

A great way to do this is to keep an ongoing list of the pain points, desires, and objections that they’ve told you in conversation, through emails, or on social media that you can pull from to create copy that connects with them.

Be sure to steer clear of insider jargon that they won’t understand and to read through your copy out loud to be sure you don’t come across robotic sounding.

And always be sure to speak directly to your audience by using the words “you” and “yours.” Remember, they’re concerned with themselves and always thinking, “What’s in it for me?”

4. Give them an invitation

Nothing is more annoying when you’re in a store and the salesperson won’t leave you alone. I know you’ve been there.

So, don’t be too in their face, give them some space and time to get to know you.

It’s not likely that people will click on a giant flashing “buy now” button when they don’t know you or trust you. Instead, you’ve got to invite them to take the first baby step toward working with you by making a low-commitment offer like to download your freebie or schedule a strategy call.

So, there it is 4 strategies to make your website stand out.
